So Apple said iWork and iLife are free for everyone, yet the website still specifies that they are free for devices purchased after oct.2013. Well I bought a used MBAir'13 this spring. I logged in with my AppleID but Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie show up with normal prices. However I have iPhoto for free.
I'm running Yosemite now, previously had Mavericks on it, then the Yosemite Public Beta.

The error I get is 'Update Unavailable with this Apple ID - This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.'
I also tried the iWork'09 trial method both on Mavericks and on Yosemite but I get the same error and I can no longer update the apps on Mavericks.
Mar 10, 2015 Support Communities / iLife / iPhoto for Mac. I'm scared to update without checking first because when going to App Store, it does not prompt me to update, but to download for free iPhoto. If I do that, does it move all my photos automatically? To be able to use iPhoto with Yosemite you need to install iPhoto 9.6. How can I download the last iPhoto version for Yosemite? Looks like any links are invalid now that Photos is out. And upgrading a pre-Yosemite version does not work. There is an update button but it does not do anything but disable itself when clicked.

I am now trying this method: 'The solution, buried in there somewhere, was to both repair disk permissions in Disk Utility and rebuild my Spotlight index.' Waiting for Spotlight to finish reindexing.
I have to mention that the MBAir serial number is registered to my support profile on apple.com so it's not a ownership problem.
