Version 2.90 of Arial is a Font Suitcase file. This file actually contains all of the infromation for the Regular, Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic typefaces. Since the file was located in your User directory it had presedence over the Standard version and the version that shipped with Office. When you disabled and attempted to remove just the Regular face, the file was still hanging around because the system was still relying on it for the Bold, Italic, and Bold/Italic faces. Also when you disabled just the Regular face, the various mismatched faces could have slightly different internals. Office will blackflag this as a bad font and therefore will not list it in the Font Drop Downs. You could still possibly use the font in Office if you manually typed in the Name in to the drop down (It could possibly have been listed in the Format->Font dialogs also and used that way).
